About Mark Rothko
About Mark Rothko
Mark Rothko (1903–1970) was a renowned American painter of Latvian origin and one of the most influential figures in the Abstract Expressionist movement. Best known for his iconic Colour Field paintings, Rothko developed a distinctive artistic style featuring large, softly defined rectangular blocks of colour that appear to float against atmospheric backgrounds. His minimalist compositions explore emotion, spirituality, and the powerful relationship between colour and human experience.
Through his masterful use of rich colours, subtle textures, and layered tones, Rothko created abstract paintings designed to evoke deep emotional responses. His artwork is recognised for its simplicity, balance, and remarkable visual depth, transforming colour into a powerful form of artistic expression. Today, Mark Rothko remains one of the most celebrated modern artists of the 20th century, with his timeless paintings displayed in prestigious museums and galleries around the world.
